This is a process by which an egg is fertilized by sperm outside the body. The process involves using fertility hormones to stimulate a woman’s ovaries, under strict monitoring, removing eggs under an anesthetic and letting sperm fertilize them in a dish in a special medium in a Laboratory or injecting a sperm directly into the egg for fertilization. The resultant embryo is then cultured for 2–6 days in the laboratory and transferred to the patient’s uterus with the intention of establishing a successful pregnancy.
This is causative in about 30 – 40% of infertility cases. It could be due to a low count/ sluggish or immobile sperm, misshapen sperm, or blockages that prevent the delivery of sperm. Illnesses, injuries, chronic health problems, lifestyle choices and other factors can play a role in causing male infertility.
This involves using tablets/ injections to stimulate the ovaries to produce “follicles” which are expected to contain eggs. These are then monitored and at the appropriate time a trigger injection may be used for release of the eggs to maximise the chances of getting pregnant.
There is some evidence to show that in certain cases like women over 35 years of age, in case of frozen embryos and in those with repeated IVF/ ICSI failures, an improvement in pregnancy rates can be achieved by drilling a small hole in the embryo shell. This is called as Assisted Laser Hatching. This facilitates the embryo in breaking out of this shell to initiate the implantation process.

This is one of the most commonly used assisted conception procedures in India. The male partner’s sperm is prepared commonly called as “washed” and are placed directly in the uterus around the time your ovary releases one or more eggs to be fertilized so as to maximise conception.
This is an advanced culture of the embryos in the laboratory, the embryos are grown for 5 to 6 days in a special fluid medium. At this stage an embryo comprises of 200 to 300 cells and is considered a robust embryo with a high implantation potential.
In some men, sperm are manufactured in the testes but are not present in the ejaculate, either due to a blockage or because of reduced sperm production. In such cases, sperm may be collected by surgical sperm retrieval techniques. These techniques are also used for men who previously had a vasectomy or a failed vasectomy reversal.
This is a procedure by which a single/ multiple cells, is removed from a human embryo and sent for genetic analysis. Sex Selection is banned in India and a punishable offence and not done as a part of PGD/ PGS. The chromosomally normal reported embryos, when transferred in the uterus, are reported to give high success rates. THIS TEST IS DONE AT GOVT APPROVED OUT-SOURCED DIAGNOSTIC LAB.
The supernumery / additional good quality embryos that result from an IVF/ ICSI cycle can be frozen in liquid nitrogen at minus 196 degrees. This can be done by the new / fast freeze or vitrification technique or by an older/ slow freeze method. These embryos when taken out of the freeze and transferred into the uterus are now reported to give equally good success rates as a “fresh” embryo. Freezing provides a back up plan in case the first cycle doesn’t result in a live born baby or in case the parents are keen for a sibling at a later time.
Egg Donation is a technique in which an oocyte/ egg from a young healthy fertile woman is used to create an embryo for another woman who has ovarian failure or poor quality eggs.
