Fertility Myths Women Should Stop Believing in ASAP

Fertility Myths Women face are very critical. Do you know what is more complicated than women in this world? It is their “fertility,” and the worst thing is there is a lot of misinformation around the topic is you no longer know what to believe anymore. Fertility issues make women emotionally vulnerable and they look for any possible source to achieve pregnancy, whether it is listening to old wives talk about fertility or searching online for hours to get their answers.

For years, fertility experts are constantly spending a large amount of time to clear these myths while providing a reliable solution like In vitro fertilization (IVF) to get pregnant. We talked to several IVF patients to learn about the most common fertility myths women should stop believing right away.

Fertility Myths Women, that can damage your Health

Fertility Myths Women 1: Birth control pills can affect your fertility

Bat-Sheva Lerner Maslow, one of the most famous endocrinologists, explains that “when it comes to birth control pills, women have mixed opinions about its impact on fertility. At the same time, some women think that birth control pills protect their fertility by saving their eggs from ovulation. Others simply worry that it will harm their fertility, especially if they rely on them for a long period of time.

In reality, neither of them is true. Once a woman goes off the birth control pill, she is as likely to get pregnant compared to if she had never been on the pills in the first place.

Fertility Myths Women 2: Irregular periods are the sign of infertility

Another popular myth that surrounds women’s fertility is irregular cycles are the early sign of infertility. However, they are not aware of the fact that “irregular periods” are quite common in women. And as far as experts explain -disruption to the sleep cycle, stress levels, and heavy exercises are some of the things that can alter the delicate hormone balance and cause irregular periods.

While irregular periods are not a sign of infertility, they can make conceiving quite challenging for women. Whether in IVF or normal situations, ovulation is the key to a normal pregnancy; which is actually 14 days before the next period starts. If your cycle is irregular, then it can throw some challenges on your path to achieve motherhood.

Fertility Myths Women 3: You cannot conceive a baby after the age of 35

“Whether you believe it or not the fertility indeed declines with age,” Dr. Nupur Garg Fertility Specialist, Gynecologist, and Obstetrician at SCI IVF. She further explained that “the aging of our eggs is a well-known biological phenomenon and commonly referred to as our biological clock. As we get closer to 40, the clock starts ticking louder and louder and as we cross the age of 40 it stops making noise. The fertility of the women peaks between 20 to 25 and as they start getting closer to 40 our chances of getting pregnant reduces by 50% due to the poor quality of eggs.”

Fertility Myths Women 4: IVF guarantees successful pregnancy to women in late 40s to 50s

You may have come across the wonders of IVF, and after listening to all the success stories, it may feel like IVF can guarantee successful pregnancies even after 40 or 50. Although it is hard to break it to, IVF is not a guaranteed way to have a baby. But what about all the celebrities who are getting pregnant during their 50s? Well, chances are there that these celebrities are not using their own eggs for the in vitro fertilization processes. However, you can still consult with your Gynecologist and Obstetrician at SCI IVF to see if the same can be done in your case as well.

Fertility Myths Women 5: It is a women’s problem

As a woman, you should not believe this in any condition. Infertility is not a mere matter controlled or caused by women. Typically, the breakdown of infertility causes, explains that 40 percent is female factors, 40 percent is malefactors, 10 percent is both male and female factors while the remaining 10 percent is unexplained. With female patients, the prime causes of infertility can be PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome), endometriosis, tubal issues, and family history. On the other hand, the male has to submit the semen sample to analyze the quality, shape, and count of the sperm that affects fertility. So, the next time someone tells you it is a women’s issue, state these facts to them.

As you can see, there are a lot of myths and misconceptions when it comes to women’s fertility. That’s why consulting with your OB and fertility specialist at SCI IVF is the key to conceive a healthy baby.
